The Cat's Pyjama Shark

Like my word play on "The cat's pyjamas"? Pyjama sharks are also called striped catsharks. Mind-blowing, isn't it?

ps - pyjamas are spelt this way.

I'm FINished With Fins

I've been loving the FINished With Fins campaign especially their posters with celebrities covering their mouths and wanted to try it. I was so happy when Shark Savers and Wild Aid responded and gave me permission to use the logos.
My Shark is not cannibalistic or anything - it just really wanted to join the picture.
Sign the pledge here.

Not another cat one!

Just when you think sharks are growing in popularity, a cat comes along and ruins everything. That's just what cats do.
Okay, I must admit that some of their pictures are rather likeable. But sharks are awesomer.

Move over Cats!

I thought I'd try out a horizontal strip for a change.
With all the new comics featuring really adorable sharks, it's time the cats moved over. They still have priceless expressions though. We'll use them sporadically. :D

Sharks love to photobomb!

Animals that photobomb are hilarious! Notice how the bear is mortified when it gets photobombed?... .that's how much this bear loves photos of itself.
The Shark in the first photo was just a trial sketch but the expression cracked me up so much that I had to keep it.

Sharks - Extinction is NOT an option - CITES 2013

CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. Over the next couple of weeks in March 2013, parties will vote on a record number of proposals for controlling trade in a variety of threatened sharks and rays, including hammerheads and mantas.
Project Aware started this campaign #CITES4Sharks to raise awareness about the importance of this meeting. I didn't want to miss the opportunity to draw and comic and be a part of this.
Sharks and Rays need your love and awe and support.

Go and Fin no more!

This comic could probably also work with the first panel alone. Jesus would tell off people for the cruel and wasteful act of finning. And He'd most likely be clever and witty about it too.

When sanity gets fuzzy

Last night I found this sketch that I'd doodled a while ago and decided to put it up. I wondered if I ought to change the celebrity's name (since I stalk several of them) but figured that since the shark has  several traits which are similar to Bucky's, he'd be the right stalkee. And maybe Darby Conley will notice this and send me an autographed Bucky Katt doll.

ps - Don't forget to comment on the link on my Facebook page and stand to win sharky gifts :) Contest ends on Sunday (11/11/12).

Evolution of the species as observed by The Shark

This was originally going to be the Evolution poster by itself and then I thought the dialogue between the cockroach and shark would be a pretty funny addition. I seem to have missed out a few characters! I should probably do a stand-alone poster and include the rest of my characters.

If evolution is supposed to make a species better than it was, humans should see if they could become more shark-ish. Why aim to be like those awful monkeys?  (or is it the other way around?). That would be kind of cool - as long as the primitive (un-evolved) humans don't start chopping up our limbs for soup.

Mindless eating machine

I think I was craving burgers when I drew this. Or at least I was craving them after. It's a random sketch but I like it.
This is another notion about sharks that people simply have - that they'll eat anything. I think it's all those film snippets showing sharks cut open and finding license plates, shoes etc inside their stomach. I've heard they're pretty fussy eaters. They'd probably like burgers though.

Everybody wants to be an Emo cat

Emo cats have been known to randomly spring up and do dance numbers on fences. Therefore, the second panel makes total sense. These ideas come to me at that point between sleep and awake - luckily I can now jot them down on my ipod and not lose such fabulous thoughts. I wonder what Steve Jobs used to make a note of his ipod idea (This is not really a Steve Jobs tribute, by the way - I am very grateful for my ipod though).
It is, in fact, a birthday wish to the bestest Emo cat inspiration.

Happy Shark Week... anyway!

Pardon me for being a teeny tiny bit bitter during Shark Week but it's justifiable considering that Shark week didn't even air on our Discovery Channel! We actually have "telebrands" for an hour on Discovery channel - to help us further discover how stupid and annoying humans can be.
I was meaning to do a post around Shark Week all year and then the lack of inspiration led to this.

Walking the cat, walking the line

Hmm, the text looks a bit too large, doesn't it? Oh well.
I like how the cat came out. Cartoon comic cats are cute and hilarious. Real life cats, not so much.

I should write my own doom song

After a much extended break, here I am. I apologise in advance for my crappy scanner - before cleaning up the images it looked like all the characters had the measles.
Anyway, I decided to set aside the lazy bone for the weekend and do nothing but sketch. Even if my ideas are crappy.

Let's just say that certain words when spoken can ruin my entire day. There are also people who are either so insensitive that they don't care how you feel about these "words" or they actually enjoy destroying your peace of mind. I thought I'd turn it into a tribute to Invader Zim. He's an extraterrestrial who is out to destroy Earth and mankind. His appearance made sense to me because for some strange reason, apparently my singleness is causing all the destruction and chaos in the world.

Good things come to those who don't wait

We have one of those exercise ball things in our house. It's become part of the furniture - we use it mostly for sitting. And that's all. I think it would be great if we simply bounced up and down on these and got fit.
Anyway, this particular scene happened frame for frame at a dinner party. One friend was sitting on my bouncy ball chair (okay fine, my sister's bouncy ball chair) and another friend mentioned that she was waiting to see if she'd fall off. I said that sometimes we mustn't wait to have good things happen to us. And I pushed the ball. I did get beaten up. I couldn't believe how strong my friend is. I guess those bouncy exercise balls really do work!
I've always liked horses and was wondering if I should ever have a horse character. In no way do I mean that my friend is horse-ish or horsey faced.

ps - If you're wondering why the human is like a half complete bust, it's because I got bored and couldn't be bothered to finish.

Normal people would have just given you a card.

This is probably the longest and most complicated (character-wise) strip I have done. It's quite painful to draw so many creatures. But this was for my friend's birthday and it works out to be a pretty cheap gift (kidding!). For those who are wondering how/what/why this bizarre concept, allow me to de-confuse you. My friend has been very difficult to anthropomorphize (if that's a word). And she gives me a hard time about not doing any sketches with her in it! Then there happened a facebook discussion about the kind of animal she would be and some of the random suggestions were "fish" and then "An armadillo! No, a cockatoo! No, wait -- a slice. of cheese." Thus was conceptualized the Armacockafishadillo. Which I thought would be kind of interesting to attempt. Oh yes, there's the cockages bit which if I don't explain could sound a bit dirty. The above mentioned friend has these little fingers that made me laugh out loud so much when I first saw them. I was like "hahaha, they're like cocktail sausages... we could name them cockages for short (no pun intended)!"

Anyway, I was quite happy with the way it turned out and then had the nagging feeling that it looked very pokemonish. I hope it's not my subconscious awareness of a pokemon creature that surfaced! I don't really have a goldfish that I pretend is Igor while I create characters. I tried having an aquarium once but that fizzled, literally, when I thought my fish would like a warm water bath.

I was supposed to do a "An Armadillo and cockatoo cross with cheese in its mouth being attacked by a wolf-squirrel cross with wine in its glass" but I shall save that for later.

ps - The fish part of the armacockafishadillo is that it has scales. I didn't want to add fins or puffy lips. I also labeled the fish bit as "tuna" so as not to confuse it with the goldfish. I wish I could draw fish a bit better.

What is it with ninja poses that makes you want to strike one for no reason?

This is my tribute to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I used to be a big fan. So much that some people called me "turtle". Now, some people call me "sharky". I probably will be referred to as some animal or the other until I die. Or even after.
Anyway, my favourite turtle was/is Raphael. He's the one with the red mask. But when Eastman and Laird first created them, all the turtles wore red masks. I figured that if I drew masks on all the characters, one would assume that they were wearing orange, blue, purple or even pink for that matter (this being a b&w comic strip and all). I rather have the character with Raphael's weapon wear the mask and have people know that the mask is red. Yes, I have weird reasons for why I do the things I do or draw the things I draw.
I shall also confess at this point that I have a thing for swords. I don't like knives and sharp objects thanks to "Final destination" movies, but I love swords thanks to He-man, She-Ra and Lion-O (why do they all have hyphenated names?).
A friend of mine said that the "mouse looks like he is forced to go on this mission and the cat couldn't care less". That describes those characters and the people they're based on perfectly.

ps - This is now my new wallpaper. I actually love it. I can't believe I drew it.
