I didn't really want to make Leo a blue shark but then again I did't want a bunch of messages asking why Leo isn't a blue shark.

Who didn't love He-Man while growing up? I've been wanting to do a real He-Man tribute for a while and finally got around to it. The idea of a Tiger Shark as Cringer/Battle cat just popped into my head and then I had no excuse but to do this. At first it was just the "expectation" one... but then I thought it would be nice to do one similar to my Thor one as well and hence the comic one. Although I couldn't really think of a series yet.

ps - I also didn't want to call this He-Shark because that's just weird.

Six fan arts #2

 

Here's the next round of fan arts based on suggestions I received. I got a lot of really nice suggestions and wish I could do them all. However, I had to choose the ones that could be sharkified best. There are a few more that I'll do soon. I noticed after I had finished them that more than half are from Britain!

Six Fan Arts #1

This is a trend on Instagram at the moment and I thought it would be fun to try out. While I'm waiting on suggestions from others, I thought I'd do some characters I've wanted to do. I absolutely loved "Top Cat" growing up. Harry Potter, who didn't go through that phase? Raphael was my favourite Ninja Turtle. I thought a blue shark as a smurf might be fun. I was a huge fan of Jim Carrey around the Mask/ Ace Ventura/ Liar Liar time.
I've been wanting to do a shark version of Jem and the Holograms but thought all that hair might look weird. It does. But this Jem turned out alright. What a great show!

Good Vibrations

I really do enjoy these takes on the ampullae of Lorenzini. "A shark's hearing is adapted to detecting very low-frequency vibrations such as those made by a struggling fish"*. But I bet they pick up happy things too.

P.S. - In case you haven't picked up on it, this is a tribute to the Beach Boys as well.

Ghost net busters!

India's first Dive Expo is happening in Pondicherry and Temple adventures asked me if I could do some awareness posters for some of the issues they face.
This is the first of them. Ghost nets are real. Many sea creatures get entrapped and die because of these.

Sharknados and dreams!

I've never really swam with sharks or gone diving to see sharks and I made it my goal to do so before this year ended. I'd been dreaming of diving with Cristina Zenato for ages and I decided to plan such a trip this year. I started planning in April or May (and even got corrective eye surgery done to allow the right amount of resting time), found a travel buddy, accommodation, flights, solved the visa problem and planned other things to do in that part of the world. I did this drawing a week before I was scheduled to leave as a gift for Cristina. I got to the US and was preparing to head to Miami before flying to the Bahamas. And that's when Hurricane Matthew hit. The poor island was quite damaged and resorts were closed - I could have still braved it and gone on an adventure but by then I was quite disappointed (that's an understatement) at the failed plan. But that's just what it was - a plan thwarted by nature. It wasn't a broken dream because the dream is still very much alive and I hope I get to fulfil it soon.

The Three Sharks

Phil Watson from Shaaark! asked me back in 2013 to collaborate on a comic with the great Jim Toomey of Sherman's Lagoon. This was when I didn't even use much colour. It was an unbelievable honor. They're the best shark cartoonists ever.

I just realised that I hadn't posted this on my website yet! I had re-drawn this in colour in March 2015. It still cracks me up.

ThunderCatsharks!

It's the 29th of February! Since it's a date that only comes around every four years, I wanted to do a special cartoon today. Drawing the Shark Alphabet allowed me to learn about many new shark species. There are quite a lot of unique sharks of which catsharks are several. That gave me the idea. I was also a big ThunderCats fan while growing up. This is actually my second tribute to them.

Shout out to "Sharktopia"!

I came across some amazing shark art the other day and sent an email to the artist saying how much I liked it. The website was "Sharktopia" with the tagline "Awareness through art" (which I love and agree with). Almost immediately I got the most enthusiastic and encouraging reply from the extremely talented Caitlin Cove saying that we shark artists need to unite and proposed we do a bit of a cross over awareness. This is me giving "Sharktopia" a shout out and here's to many more collaborations and hoping many more shark artists will join hands (pens/ pencils/ paintbrushes/ wacoms/ whatever) to create a greater awareness for sharks.

Jaw size does matter.

I wanted to do a little something to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "Jaws". It is the movie that started it all. It may have created some unwarranted and unnecessary fear but it also created intrigue and fascination in some people. We've come a long way and there haven't been very many shark movies that are as good. So here's to you, Steven Spielberg and Peter Benchley - thanks again!

I was requested to draw the Shark along with some kind of "Peanuts" reference. I'd done a tribute before but it was time for an updated version - here are two scenarios in colour!

Sharks are Friends Not Food #2

I wanted to update my previous "Sharks are friends not food" sketch and this time I thought I'd throw in a small tribute to one of my favourite TV shows.

This was part of my original vision for my Nighthawks parody. I think it would be rather fun to have coffee with Shaaark!  by Phil Watson and Sherman from Sherman's Lagoon by Jim Toomey. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to draw their sharks but they look recognizable enough, don't they?

I'd like to have a fourth shark to take the place of the barista though.

Lunch atop a Skyscraper with The Sharks

The first time I came across the famous "Lunch atop a skyscraper" photo was in university when my friend had it in her room. Since then I had seen the Friends cast, Muppets, Hollywood leading men and other versions. So I asked myself, why not a 'Sharks' version?

Superman vs Super Annoying Shark

The Shark loves to annoy Superman. The great thing about comics is that squirrels can appear out of no where and disappear when you tell them to go away.
Superman was super hard to draw! I salute those who spend a lifetime drawing him for the comics.
Superman is one of my favourite superheroes (and he's super cute too) - I suppose this is how I show my appreciation.

Sharkzilla and its not-so-powerful shark breath.

I love the new "Godzilla" movie. My only criticism is that they didn't have enough Godzilla action/footage and as always it was about the humans. But all of the dull, slow bits were worth sitting through the moment Godzilla used his atomic breath. It was very exciting.
I also seem to be curious about quarks. Probably because when I was in school, we didn't learn about them. It seems that just as much we seem to discover with telescopes, there would be just as much to discover with microscopes. Just as exciting!

The Shark with the salamander tattoo

I was sure someone must have done a Salamander version of Lisbeth Salander. I couldn't find anything on google so I'm hoping this is the first :D
I loved the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson - and I was especially impressed with the character of Lisbeth. I hope my drawing kind of looks like her (or at least the movie version of her).
