Sharks and Recreation

I wanted to kickstart the year with a masterpiece but this took me way longer than I thought. I'd actually sketched this out about a year or two ago and never got around to finishing it. It is inspired by "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat but I, of course, had to name mine "Sharks and Recreation".

Sharktivity #27: Port Jackson shark paints a mural (DIY series #2)

Here's a Port Jackson shark working on a mural. Extra points for those who can recognise what that mural image is based on.
I might have gotten the markings on the shark a bit wrong but this is one of those bullheaded (haha) sharks I dread drawing. Which is why I'm glad it is listed as least concern on the IUCN red list.

ps - So, the mural is inspired by the drawing of a shark Quint did. Someone recently brought it to my notice and I thought it would be a nice mural because that's about all I can manage before I become impatient.

Sharktivity #22: Leopard shark makes some origami animals

Leopard shark definitely has more patience than me when it comes to doing origami. I attempted a crane but gave up when my crane did NOT look like the foldings even though I followed exactly what they said.

Anyway, the leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata) - NOT to be confused with the Zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) - is a species of houndshark. They're really cute and are currently listed as least concern on the IUCN red list. Let's leave it that way.

Six Fan Arts #1

This is a trend on Instagram at the moment and I thought it would be fun to try out. While I'm waiting on suggestions from others, I thought I'd do some characters I've wanted to do. I absolutely loved "Top Cat" growing up. Harry Potter, who didn't go through that phase? Raphael was my favourite Ninja Turtle. I thought a blue shark as a smurf might be fun. I was a huge fan of Jim Carrey around the Mask/ Ace Ventura/ Liar Liar time.
I've been wanting to do a shark version of Jem and the Holograms but thought all that hair might look weird. It does. But this Jem turned out alright. What a great show!

Shout out to "Sharktopia"!

I came across some amazing shark art the other day and sent an email to the artist saying how much I liked it. The website was "Sharktopia" with the tagline "Awareness through art" (which I love and agree with). Almost immediately I got the most enthusiastic and encouraging reply from the extremely talented Caitlin Cove saying that we shark artists need to unite and proposed we do a bit of a cross over awareness. This is me giving "Sharktopia" a shout out and here's to many more collaborations and hoping many more shark artists will join hands (pens/ pencils/ paintbrushes/ wacoms/ whatever) to create a greater awareness for sharks.

You can also find Sharktopia on Facebook and Instagram.

Race Sharks

I got the idea of drawing a hammerhead shark designed race car while drawing another sketch and thought it would be fun to do a bunch of shark designs on race cars. But I got bored quite quickly. I guess I shall not be entering the car sticker industry.

Sharkartoons!

My first Art Show! This is quite exciting. Cuckoo Club Diner in Madras, India has graciously allowed me to display my work on their wall for two weeks. I've done about six new pieces for the exhibit. They go up on the evening of the 26th.

Don't mind all my "One-of-a-kind"s, "Limited time only" and "never-before-seen" phrases. They're just marketing gimmicks. The exhibit is for only two weeks though. Hopefully I'll have more.
The prints are priced starting from $40 to about $80 (excluding frames).

Sea Scapes: Ocean Harmony

My sister asked me to paint her an "underwater" scene for her house. She gave me this rough doodle to describe what she wanted.

After much prayer that my sea creatures turn out alright, this here is my finished drawing.

I didn't add the "sea unicorns". I thought I'd save those for a less surreal drawing.

Nightsharks

Here's my rendition of "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper. This is another painting I saw for the first time at a friend's place. It must be nostalgia month or something. This is also another picture that has been parodied by several people. I haven't seen a Shark one yet though.
I wonder if I should change some of the sharks. I wasn't too sure about the Tiger and Oceanic.
And it's missing the red but I'm not going to make it look as if my shark was bleeding.

Lunch atop a Skyscraper with The Sharks

The first time I came across the famous "Lunch atop a skyscraper" photo was in university when my friend had it in her room. Since then I had seen the Friends cast, Muppets, Hollywood leading men and other versions. So I asked myself, why not a 'Sharks' version?
